Chat moderation

Rules, banned phrases and spam protection for your Twitch and Kick chat - each with its own response, step by step.

The Chat moderation page keeps your chat in line. The bot watches every message and, when one breaks a rule, runs the response you built for it. Tip messages are handled separately by the word filter.

There are three kinds of check:

  • Rules - named groups of words and phrases, each with its own response. Use them when different things deserve different treatment: spoilers get deleted with a friendly reminder, self-promo gets a short timeout, slurs get a ban.
  • Banned words & phrases - the quick list. Type a word, press Enter, done. Every phrase shares the list’s default response unless you click it and give it its own.
  • Protections - links (with an allow list), caps, emote spam and symbol spam.

Mods and the broadcaster are never moderated. Each rule, the list and each protection can also skip VIPs and subscribers.

Responses

A response is a list of steps that run top to bottom:

  • Delete message - removes the message.
  • Timeout or ban - times the viewer out for a length you choose, or bans them permanently.
  • Message - the bot posts a line in chat. {user} is the viewer’s name. Up to three messages, in any order around the other steps.

So “delete it, tell them why, then post the rules” or “post a warning, then time them out for ten minutes” are both one response.

Some combinations don’t mean anything, so the editor won’t let you build them:

  • A timeout and a ban together. A timeout is a ban with an end date, so one would just replace the other. Pick one - a ban is the “permanently” option on the same step.
  • A delete next to a timeout or ban. Timing someone out or banning them already clears their messages from chat. Adding a timeout to a response that deletes swaps the delete out for you.
  • The same message twice, or an empty message.

Protections can’t ban: a threshold set slightly too low could ban people for good. They go up to a timeout.

When a viewer sends a burst of offending lines, each line is still deleted, but they get one round of messages and one timeout or ban, not one per line.

Kick caps timeouts at 7 days; longer timeouts are cut to 7 days in Kick chat.

When several things match

If a message breaks more than one rule - or a rule and the phrase list, or a phrase and the caps protection - the strictest response runs: a ban beats a timeout, a longer timeout beats a shorter one, a timeout beats a delete, and a delete beats messages on their own.

Disguised spellings

Rules and the phrase list can catch disguised spellings: accents, unicode lookalikes, leetspeak, stretched letters (wooord) and spaced-out letters (w o r d). Use * for wildcards - *word also matches inside longer words. It matches patterns rather than reading, so a word split in two or a phonetic misspelling still gets through - add those spellings as you see them.

Try it out

The Try it out box runs a message through your saved setup as a regular viewer and shows which rule matched and every step that would run, including the exact lines the bot would post.

!permit

Mods can type !permit user in chat to exempt someone from all chat moderation for a short window, so they can post a link you asked for.

The bot needs to be a moderator

Deleting, timing out and banning on Twitch need TipPageBot to be a moderator in your channel - type /mod TipPageBot. On Kick, they run through your own Kick connection. Messages are posted either way. Every action, and any that couldn’t be carried out, shows in Recent actions with the rule and the message that triggered it.
